From the Imagination Series
My mom and sister-in-law visited a few weeks back and requested we put Art Party on the agenda (because they’re the coolest). We made some sweet magnet collages, which is where I got the inspiration for this week’s challenge.
There are tons of reasons to love collage, especially if you’re an apprehensive art partier. It’s a great way to generate ideas when you don’t know what you want to create. It’s a simple way to achieve lots of interesting layers and textures, and there’s just something inviting about flipping through a magazine, scissors in hand.
As the three of us collaged at my kitchen table to the Moana soundtrack (true story and best night ever!), I thought about how awesome it was that we could deconstruct and re-shape existing images into something totally new. I mean, turning olives into sailors and comforters into islands?! That’s fun, and a valuable superpower in a world that can use some transforming. So happy collaging, and after you’re done, keep envisioning new possibilities for the world!
Art Challenge
Time: At least 20 minutes
You Need: Old magazines; your sketchbook or another surface to glue your images onto; a glue stick or mod podge
What to do
- Create a fantasy landscape from cut out magazine images- maybe a deserted isle, a jungle, a cityscape, an alien planet, or rainbow land!
- You can envision your landscape first then start finding images, or cut out whatever catches your attention then decide on your scene.
- Get creative with how you transform the magazine images. An apple in the magazine doesn’t have to be an apple in your collage!
- Arrange your pieces and glue them down.
- Optional (and awesome!): Share your collages on instagram with #makeartlifecollage and it will pop up in the feed below so we can all enjoy it!
